Safety Tips for Using BBQ Grills

Who doesn't love a barbeque? Nothing is more delicious than tasty grilled chicken and juicy grilled veggies served hot and served outdoors.

When family and friends come together, one thing that is always enjoyed by everyone is a backyard barbeque. It’s a time and place for everyone to mingle and relish some delicious recipes.

Barbeques can be a lot of fun, however, if you’re the one cooking there’s a lot to keep in mind. You need to be very diligent and careful when barbecuing to ensure your family, neighbours and you are safe. When using any outdoor grill, you’ll need to pay attention to all of the little things.

Here's our safety tips check-list:

#1.

If you’re concerned that your BBQ grill is not performing, have it checked out before you start to grill. You can also call a Barbeque store near you or a Barbecue Set-Up service to come and check the BBQ for you.

#2.

Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your home. Make sure the grill is not close to your garage, storeroom, or any other place which can easily catch fire.

#3.

Don't let children play or experiment with a grill alone. If they want to try and learn then make sure they are with an adult who knows everything about the grill. You can also encourage your child to read the user and safety manual which is sent with your barbecue.

#4.

Clean your grill regularly. Grease in your grill drip pan needs to be cleaned out on a regular basis because grease acts as fuel and can easily catch on fire.

#5.

Check for leaks with hoses and connections as leaks are very dangerous. Hose leaks cannot be seen with a naked eye or a gas smell easily detected. At the start of grilling season, check for leaks by applying soapy water to hoses and connectors and then test by turning on the gas. If bubbles appear on any hose there is a leak. Fix the hose or connector and you're ready to grill safely. If you have a problem with identifying where a leak may be, call a barbeque assembly service near you.

#6.

Always keep a fire extinguisher nearby and know how to operate an extinguisher in case of an emergency. Your fire extinguisher should be kept at a proper distance away from the grill but close enough to grab it quickly.

#7.

Don't overload your grill, especially if you are cooking fatty cuts of meat. Too many fat drippings can easily catch fire and get out of control. If you are cooking a lot of meat, don't take any chances. Take the time to cook without overloading your grill as safety is always a priority.

#8.

Never use any grill indoors as it is not SAFE! Both natural gas or liquid propane grills release gases which are Carbon Monoxide.

#9.

Keep your grill on a flat surface and if need be use a grill pad or splatter mat underneath. Grills when placed on a slope or uneven surface can easily tip over and cause a fire.

Choose appropriate attire when barbecuing as some clothing fabrics are flammable. Pay attention to what you are wearing and make sure your clothing is not draping on the grill.

The best times of summer are spent with family and friends at a barbeque, but please keep in mind safety tips when grilling.
